MSafe Information

As we prepare for the transition to our new safety management platform, MSafe (formerly known as Safety Stratus), below is an overview of what this system is, the timeline for rollout, and what changes you can expect in your lab spaces.

System Overview and Key Changes

MSafe is taking over as the University's primary chemical inventory and safety management platform, replacing Chematix.

Here is what you need to know about the upcoming transition:

  • Deactivation of Chematix: Chematix will be officially deactivated at the end of this calendar year.
  • Phased Chemical Inventory Rollout: The MSafe chemical inventory module becomes available on August 10th. Initial visibility will be limited to a few buildings that have already submitted complete inventories. Full migration of all University chemical inventories will take approximately 2 years.
  • Hazardous Waste Module: The hazardous waste module will also transition to MSafe in the coming months.
  • Immediate PI Actions: Principal Investigators (PIs) can configure their personnel and verify their assigned spaces as soon as the program becomes available.

Requirements for Lab Spaces

All lab spaces are required to maintain an inventory in MSafe.

Data collection will occur on a building-by-building basis. Your Department Safety Officer (DSO) or Safety Partner will notify your lab when your building’s inventory is due.

What Needs to be Cataloged?

  • You are welcome to upload all chemicals in your space.
  • Minimum Requirement: To comply with building code requirements, you must track chemicals that are more hazardous than an irritant (anything beyond the ! logo in the GHS system).
  • Note: Items like agars, buffers, and enzymes generally do not need to be cataloged based on their hazard class.

Proactive Inventory Submission (Two Options)

If you would like to complete your inventory requirement ahead of your building's scheduled rollout, you can use one of the following two methods:

Option 1: Update via Chematix

  1. Update your chemical inventory in Chematix.
  2. Email [email protected] to let them know it is up to date.
  3. The team will pull the data from Chematix and prepare it for upload into MSafe.

Option 2: MSafe Bulk Upload Document

If you do not have a Chematix inventory or if it is out of date:

  1. Download and fill out the MSafe upload document.
  2. Important Formatting Rules:
  • Fill out all required fields.
  • Each row represents a single bottle or gas cylinder. Do not enter multi-bottle counts in the quantity columns.
  • Need CAS numbers? Use the EPA CAS Registry Search tool if you are having difficulty finding them.
  1. Email your completed import document to [email protected].

Note: Labs currently cannot bulk import inventories directly into the system on their own, so submitting the document to the email above is required.
