UMN campus major event policies and procedures

Hosting a major event on campus?

Your event qualifies as “major” if it meets at least one of these criteria:

  • At least 200 people are expected to attend
  • The event may pose a campus safety threat or require additional security due to the subject, speaker or other factors
  • Political figures or dignitaries will be attendance

If your event meets the criteria above, you must fill out an event request form.  The University prioritizes mission-related events (academic, research, and outreach) over external requests when considering an event proposal.

Being safe

For events that are large, involve high profile speakers or contain the potential for civil unrest, a safety plan may be required.

The Department of Public Safety will work with you and your team on developing a plan specific to your event, audience and potential risks.

Plan ahead

Start your event planning at least 60 days before the event. Many approvals and permit processes have a 14 day turnaround time and space can fill up quickly. You can submit a space request before your event has been approved.

If you are unsure about whether your event requires approval or a permit, contact us.
