Insect and Rodent Control

New Construction

  • To ensure that pests and vermin are not attracted to the job site, all food waste shall be disposed of in a container with a lid.
  • Contractors should enforce designated eating areas to ensure food leftovers or debris are not scattered about the construction site to minimize vermin feeding and attraction.
  • Pest control for insects (cockroaches) shall be initiated during construction of new or renovated food facilities and research animal quarters.
  • A licensed pest control operator shall apply a dry pesticide bait (powdered or granular material) such as boric acid or other approved material to hollow door frames and hollow walls that are not sealed or capped. The operator also shall apply the pesticide where electric lines, communication lines, water lines and sewer lines pass through the walls in the above-listed facilities.
  • Procedures shall be reviewed with the Environmental Hygiene Officer at the beginning of the construction process. This procedure may be omitted if so directed by the Environmental Hygiene Officer. Pest control for rodents (mice) shall be initiated a minimum of two months prior to occupancy of all new or extensively renovated buildings. The contractor shall engage the services of a licensed pest control company to provide extensive rodent control. The Environmental Hygiene Officer shall be consulted prior to the application of any rodent control procedures and techniques.

Demolition

Demolition shall include the following for vermin eradication:

  • Buildings to be razed, or partially razed, shall be treated with a pesticide(s) to ensure that the building(s) is free of vermin (rodents, insects).
    • A pest control operator that is licensed by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture shall apply pesticide.
    • All pesticides shall be EPA-registered and applied according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • The Environmental Hygiene Officer (EHO) shall be notified at least two weeks before application of any pesticide.
  • Treatment shall be done at least one week before razing the building(s).
    • The use of glue boards (sticky pads) for rodent control is always strictly prohibited on University property.
    • After the initial treatment, the EHO and the pest control operator shall arrange a date and time to do a joint inspection of the building(s) to be razed. Together, they shall certify that the pesticide treatment was effective and that the building is vermin-free.
    • If vermin are found during the joint inspection, the building(s) shall be treated again. Once treated again, the EHO shall certify that the building(s) are vermin free before razing.
  • A record of certificate of pesticide application shall be submitted to the EHO. The application shall note the pesticide(s) used and quantity, method of application, location of application, targeted vermin, and pre-treatment and post-treatment inspection results.
    • The EHO shall approve and return the certificate to the contractor for inclusion in the final closeout documents.
