The University of Minnesota’s Exposure Control Plan for Bloodborne Pathogens covers all employees who have, or may have, occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens in the workplace. The plan promotes safe work practices to minimize the incidence of disease due to bloodborne pathogens. 

Required Training

There are two online bloodborne pathogen training courses for University students and employees.

Bloodborne Pathogens Annual OSHA Requirement (UHS110)

This course is for employees who may have occupational exposure to human blood, human cell lines, or other potentially infectious materials as defined by OSHA. The course must be completed annually and consists of the online module and Job-Specific Training provided by the supervisor.

Bloodborne Pathogens Building Access Only (UHS111)

This course is for students, faculty, staff, and visitors who need Bloodborne Pathogens training for building access, but will not engage in work or class work where exposure might occur. This is a one-time course.

Hepatitis B immunization

Hepatitis B immunization is offered to all employees who have the potential for occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. The vaccination series is strongly encouraged unless the employee has previously received the complete hepatitis B series, antibody testing has revealed that the employee is immune, the vaccine is contraindicated for medical reasons, or the employee declines the immunization. Employees that are required to complete this series or provide proof of completion will find the requirement listed in their Occupational Health Portal.

The immunization consists of a series of two inoculations that are four weeks apart and is provided to employees at no cost. See the BOHD Clinical Services web page to schedule an appointment to complete the series.
