Equipment Performance Evaluations and Spot Checks

Medical and veterinary radiation producing equipment is required to have equipment performance evaluation (EPE) testing prior to use ensure it is functioning properly.  Ongoing EPE checks are required either every 12 or 24 months, depending on the type of equipment. An EPE must also be completed if there is a tube replacement or any other repair that could affect radiation output. These checks must be done before the repaired unit is used for patients. A unit that has been tagged out of use, and is brought into use again, must also have function testing done.  If you are not sure if an EPE is required call DRS to check.

Daily QA/QC checks and spot checks are required for CT units in addition to EPEs.  Some of this testing is completed by the CT operator and some must be completed by a registered service provider certified for CT.  Vendors must provide image quality phantoms to be used for the daily checks and spot checks.

Except in very limited circumstances, equipment testing must be conducted by individuals registered as Service Providers with the Minnesota Department of Health – Radiation Control Unit.  The Department of Radiation Safety, the Department of Radiology, and many outside vendors offer this service.  Please contact DRS at (612) 626-6002 or email [email protected] to review the options for your specific equipment.
